〈〈 Including your first Thing Maintaining S.A.R.A.H. 〉〉
For a list of openHAB compatible devices look here and click the ‘Bindings’ link on the left.
These are devices that we have tested so far. It is not intended to be inclusive of all possible devices currently available.
N.B. Please make sure you buy the same sensors for all doors or all windows or all garage doors. You can use one type of sensor for doors and a different one for windows and another one for garage doors, but please make sure you buy the same sensors for all windows and the same sensors for all doors and the same sensors for all garage doors. This will prevent conflicts in how the devices are handled.
General Z-wave devices
-
- Click here to view all Z-wave devices – Search for Z-Wave devices and get some ideas…
USB Controllers
-
- Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5, Z-Wave Plus USB to create gateway – Works like a champ, no issues at all.
Door/Windows sensors
-
- GoControl Z-Wave Door/Window Sensor – WADWAZ-1 – Works well for doors and garage doors. A little big for widows.
- Z-Wave Plus Rare Earth Magnets Door & Window Sensor, White & Brown – Also, great for doors and garage doors, but a bit big for windows.
- Z-Wave Plus Gold Plated Reliability Garage Door Tilt Sensor, White – Work well, and are easier to setup than contact switches because they don’t need a magnet to work. I prefer the contact switches because they give a more immediate response as being open or closed than waiting for the door to open enough to trigger the response.
- Haozee Z-Wave Door/Window Sensor,Z-Wave Magnet Lock Detector – These oval-shaped ones work great for doors and windows, because they are pretty small. Downside is they don’t have a tamper alarm like other bigger sensors.
- NEO Z-Wave Plus Door/Window Sensor – Same as the Haozee, same size and no tamper alarm. Works great, no issues.
Multi-sensors
-
- Dome Home Automation Motion Detector Z-Wave – Light Sensor – (DMMS1) – Great little motion sensor with light sensor. Perfect for triggering a light when someone enters the room. Not terribly sensitive to light, but does the job.
- ZOOZ Z-Wave Plus 4-in-1 Sensor ZSE40 VER. 2.0 (motion/light/temp/humidity) – I love that they have the light, temp and humidity along with the motion sensor, but they do tend to trigger when nothing is there. So, these work okay for triggering lights, but DO NOT USE them for the alarm system because you will have false alarms.
Lights
-
- Monoprice 127482 Smart RGB Bulb Dimmable – Works great. Can change color temp (warm to cool white) or change to any color. Is also dimmable.
- GoControl Z-Wave Dimmable LED Light Bulb, LB60Z-1 – Works ok for a simple dimmable bulb, but in some cases you will have to click them twice to turn off. Fortunately, this is fixed when using S.A.R.A.H..
Switches
-
- GE Z-Wave switches – Never had any issues. They are just the best devices I’ve seen so far.
Outlets
-
- GE Z-Wave outlets – They just work like they’re supposed to.
Range extenders/Repeaters
-
- Aeotec Range Extender 6, Z-Wave Plus repeater – Plug it in and it just works. No setup needed. Perfect for adding range to a mailbox or the upstairs.
Sirens
-
- VISION ZM1601US-5 Z-wave PLUS Wireless Siren & Strobe Alarm, Gen5 – Works great and has ability to just flash LED’s without siren. Perfect for testing and getting setup.
USB Speakers
-
- Logitech S150 USB Speakers with Digital Sound – Sounds great, but you won’t be able to use the volume controls while connected to the Raspberry Pi. Volume will be controlled by openHAB. More than likely, any USB speakers should work, but these sound good and are inexpensive. I recommend you don’t use the sound port on the Raspberry Pi. The sound is awful.
